[lɔstdʒenə'reɪʃn; englisch »verlorene Generation«], Lost Generation, angeblich von Gertrude Stein geprägte Bezeichnung für eine Gruppe amerikanischer Schriftsteller v. a. im Paris der 1920er-Jahre, für die die Erfahrung des Ersten Weltkrieges zu persönlicher Desillusionierung und zur Entfremdung von tradierten Wertvorstellungen geführt hatte. Zu dieser Gruppe werden im Allgemeinen gezählt: E. E. Cummings, M. Cowley, J. Dos Passos, F. S. Fitzgerald und E. Hemingway. Mit den Werken der Lostgeneration (etwa Hemingways »The sun also rises«, 1926; deutsch »Fiesta«) nahm der moderne Realismus eine Wende zu Skepsis, Auflösung des bürgerlichen Weltbildes und Verlust des Fortschrittsglaubens.
